Program Description
This program prepares students for employment as air conditioning, refrigeration and heating mechanics and it provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed. Classroom and shop experiences enable the student to become proficient in the installation, repair, and maintenance of air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Included is instruction in the theory and application of the basic principles involved in the conditioning of air. The operating characteristics of various cooling and heating units and parts are also studied. Blueprint reading and the use of technical reference manuals are included. The student will learn to troubleshoot and repair compressors, valves, and electromechanical controls.

Program Description
The Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning/Refrigeration (HVAC-R) 1 program is designed to train the student in the basic theory, fundamental principles, and the practical applications which develop the knowledge and skills necessary for entry into the basic industry service and installation occupations. The student should obtain EPA certification prior to completion in order to be employed in any job that requires work with refrigerants. The program was awarded a national accreditation by the ESCO Institute in 1999. Lively Technical College is an approved testing site for the E.P.A. Section 608 Refrigerant Certification and R410A Safety Certification. The program has an active advisory committee that works closely with the Externship Program to provide students valuable field experience upon completion of the course study. The program is accredited by HVAC Excellence.

Through real-world projects—including “on-the-job” experiences— you’ll achieve hands-on knowledge of HVAC/R operations, installation and repairs, troubleshooting, and key issues like safety and indoor air quality. The College’s lab gives you access to a wide range of up-to-date equipment, including residential split heating and cooling systems, commercial water-cooled systems, ice machines, refrigerators and freezers.
This CCP program's course content includes broad, transferable skills, and stresses the understanding of all aspects of the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration industry. The curriculum emphasizes operational functions of systems, along with troubleshooting and repair of systems. The underlying principles of technology, labor issues, health, safety and environmental issues are also covered.
Shop or laboratory activities are an integral part of this program. These activities include instruction in the use of safety procedures and in the care of tools, equipment, materials and processes found in the industry.
