Program Description

The Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) Technology program will train you in operating and maintaining various types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and HVACR accessories. Earn an Associate of Applied Science and pursue work as an HVACR Mechanic, Installer, and more.

In as little as two terms, you can earn a Residential HVAC Certificate of Completion and enter the workforce. With one more term, you will earn your Commercial, Industrial HVAC & Building Performance Certificate of Completion. These are stackable credentials. Finish a total of five terms (which is under two years full-time) and you will earn an Associate's degree (AAS). 

Residential HVAC, Certificate of Completion: With the Residential HVAC Certificate of Completion, you will have the basic knowledge to enter the Residential HVACR workforce.

Commercial, Industrial HVAC & Building Performance, Certificate of Completion: With the Commercial, Industrial HVAC & Building Performance Certificate of Completion, you will have an in-depth background in commercial and industrial refrigeration, steam and hot water boilers and boiler controls, chillers and chiller controls, green building performance, and building automation controls.

In the course of completing the program, you will create system designs that will include calculating building loads, duct design, performance analysis, and code enforcement.

Eastern New Mexico University

Program Description

The mission of the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell HVAC-R program is to provide high quality, easily accessible, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration training to meet the employment needs of southeastern New Mexico.

ENMU-Roswell offers a Certificate of Occupational Training and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning-Refrigeration (HVAC-R) Technology. ENMU-Roswell also offers a Certificate of Occupational Training in Commercial Refrigeration. HVAC-R systems include control temperature, humidity, and the total air quality in residential, commercial, and industrial structures worldwide. Additionally, the food service and medical industries rely very heavily upon the reliability of heating and cooling systems. HVAC-R technicians install, repair, and maintain these systems using strong mathematical skills, computer literacy, and communication skills, in addition to hands-on skills related to the latest technology specific to HVAC-R equipment, tools, and systems.

In addition to supporting institutional learning outcomes and building upon the foundational general education outcomes, upon completion of this program students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of operating sequences on HVAC/R equipment.

  • Demonstrate ability to install and repair according to manufacturer’s specifications.

  • Apply critical thinking to properly size equipment in residential and commercial settings.

  • Accurately understand code requirements.

  • Analyze and interpret blue prints and plans for HVAC/R.

Santa Fe Community College

As you earn your HVAC certification, you’ll learn or hone up on the basics in HVAC operations, from blueprint reading to air movement, distribution, heat load calculations, and other essential subjects. Your HVAC training includes the most current information on the safe and technical aspects of the operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art HVAC systems.

The program develops and improves job skills, preparing you to enter the apprentice phase for licensure as a journeyman. You also can earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Building Science and Construction Technologies, which prepares you for entry-level HVAC jobs.

Those interested in combining their Plumbing and HVAC knowledge can pursue an expanded certificate with SFCC’s Facilities Maintenance Program. Employment opportunities are currently in high demand for workers with a degree or certificate in Facilities Maintenance, HVAC, or Plumbing.
