Berks Career & Technology Center

Program Description

This program is accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) through the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and provides participants with defined career paths in the industry. The program uses project-based methods and national performance standards to teach students the knowledge and skills needed for a successful future in this field.

Instruction in this course includes the theory and application of the basic principles involved in the conditioning of air, cooling, heating, filtering and controlling of humidity. Students develop skills in assembling and installing tubes and pipes, motors, compressors, control devices, valves and thermostats, and gain an understanding of blueprints and schematics related to equipment and systems. Students must be able to diagnose equipment malfunctions and be able to read and understand technical reference manuals. Energy management control technology is taught as it relates to domestic, commercial and industrial air systems, heat pumps, forced air conditioning systems and microcomputer systems control.

Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center

Program Description

Within the curriculum, students gain fundamental knowledge, and hands-on experience with:

  • air conditioning

  • electrical and automated controls practices

  • reading schematics

  • electrical controls

  • building circuits

  • working with chemicals

  • piping practices

  • commercial refrigeration

  • heating systems, including types of furnaces

  • oil and gas boilers

  • efficiency testing

  • energy management

  • safety practices

Additional training is provided in related plumbing, related electrical, and installation operations. Students participate in a print reading and related math course. Students are trained to install, troubleshoot, and service HVAC equipment. The program emphasizes the importance of good workmanship, professionalism, and work ethic.

Following successful completion of this diploma program, students may pursue employment as HVAC Technicians to work in residential or commercial settings, including homes, schools, hospitals, office buildings, or factories.

North Montco Technical Career Center

Program Description

The HVAC program at North Montco Technical Career Center (NMTCC) consists of basic to advanced instruction in both the installation and servicing of residential systems. Students are trained in electrical principles, plumbing, oil and gas heating, air conditioning, heat pumps and basic refrigeration systems.

NMTCC's HVAC program has been granted accreditation by  HVAC Excellence. As an accredited program, students who complete the HVAC program at NMTCC can now be fast tracked to higher entry level positions with some of North America's premier contractors.

Air Conditioning Contractors of Western Pennsylvania Apprenticeship

Program Description

This four-year, State of Pennsylvania registered program is designed to prepare the serious-minded for a career in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) industry. The program is held two nights a week - seven months a year. The related training is complemented by on-the-job training (OJT’s) the apprentice receives from their employer.

United Association of Steamfitters Local 449 Technology Center

Program Description

Our focus is to provide training to our students on all types of commercial equipment found in today’s modern buildings. This equipment is fully operational in our “Live-Fire” labs where students are required to service, troubleshoot and repair actual machines that are connected to power and fuel. The breath of our equipment and labs far surpasses most paid for profit technical schools. With over 150 fully functional lab stations, students have an opportunity to work with their hands and learn from our instructors who are leaders in the industry!
